En el siglo II la Iglesia tomó la palabra “Ichthys”, pez en griego, como símbolo de Cristo. A partir del siglo III la imagen del pez se utilizaba como símbolo de Cristo.
En esta simbología, las letras de la palabra “Ichthys” representan las iniciales de la frase:

Y=Yios (Hijo);

Significado: “Jesús, Cristo, Hijo de Dios, Salvador”
